What Is At-Risk Behaviour?

At-risk behaviour in sexual health refers to actions or habits that increase an individual's vulnerability to negative consequences related to their sexual health. These behaviours can heighten the risk of getting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV leading to emotional distress, and other adverse outcomes. At-risk sexual behaviours can vary widely and may include:

  1. Unprotected Sex: Engaging in sexual intercourse without the use of condoms or other forms of protection along with condoms such as PrEP. This can increase the risk of both STIs and unintended pregnancies.
  2. Multiple Sexual Partners: Having a protection plan is important when multiple sex partners are involved. There is a high chance of risk of getting infected with STIs and HIV. It’s important to use condoms for Oral, Vaginal and Anal sex and factor in regular STI testing before your next encounter.
  3. Substance Abuse: The use of drugs or alcohol before or during sexual activity can impair judgment and decision-making, leading to risky sexual behaviours, such as unprotected sex or engaging in sexual activities with partners of unknown sexual health status.
  4. Lack of Communication: Failing to communicate openly and honestly with sexual partners about sexual histories, boundaries, and contraceptive choices can lead to misunderstandings and risky behaviours.
  5. Engaging in Risky Sexual Practices: Some sexual practices, such as unprotected anal or vaginal intercourse, can carry a higher risk of transmitting or contracting STIs.
  6. Not Getting Regular STI Testing: Failing to get tested for STIs regularly, especially if engaging in sexual activity with multiple partners, can delay the diagnosis and treatment of infections, increasing the risk of complications.
  7. Relying on Withdrawal Method: Relying solely on the withdrawal method (pulling out) as a form of contraception is ineffective and can result in unintended pregnancies and also STIs including HIV.
  8. Ignoring Symptoms: Failing to seek medical attention for symptoms of STIs, such as unusual discharge, sores, or pain, can lead to delayed treatment and complications.
  9. Ignoring Regular Health Check-Ups: Neglecting regular healthcare check-ups, including gynaecological or urological examinations, can prevent early detection of sexual health issues. Remember some STIs do not display any symptoms.

It's essential to understand that at-risk sexual behaviours can lead to significant consequences, both in terms of physical health and emotional well-being.
