The holiday season is upon us. As we approach the holidays, many of us, including our friends and colleagues, will be hosting parties to celebrate the end of another year. Likewise, there will be clubs /bars that will be offering New Year’s discounts to attract more customers to their establishments.
Winding down and chilling with friends can be one of the biggest stress busters during holidays and at the end of the year. But it’s also a time when we tend to overdo things. For many, the end-of-year celebrations can amplify existing struggles or create new challenges related to substance misuse. Understanding the complexities of this issue and implementing strategies to address it is crucial for individuals and communities.
While the holiday season and New Year's celebrations are pleasant, they can also be emotionally fraught. People are stressed out because of a variety of circumstances, including family problems, financial pressures, and the need to create picture-perfect moments. These tensions can cause people to seek temporary comfort from their anxieties by turning to substances as a coping method.
Alcohol, in particular, is frequently used in celebrations. It becomes a mainstay at everything from office celebrations to family gatherings. Excessive alcohol intake, on the other hand, can cause a variety of problems, including impaired judgment, health concerns, strained relationships, and accidents. Furthermore, other substances may be more accessible and prevalent during these celebrations, contributing to an elevated risk of misuse and reliance. Here are a few.
What to do when you throw a house party
1) Planning - Throwing a memorable house party involves more than just fun; it also requires responsible planning to minimize substance and alcohol overuse risks. Start by setting clear boundaries and expectations. Communicate guidelines regarding alcohol consumption, emphasizing moderation and encouraging guests to drink responsibly. Offer a variety of nonalcoholic beverages to ensure alternatives are readily available.
2) Setting Limits - Implement strategies to monitor and control alcohol distribution while hosting a house party. Consider keeping an eye on consumption levels and limiting excessive drinking.
3) Setting a supportive environment- Create an environment that does not just revolve solely around drinking. Organize engaging games, entertainment, or food experiences to shift the focus away from alcohol. Make sure you have enough snacks and water to ensure your guests are replenished. Additionally, ensure guests have safe transportation options available, like designated drivers, rideshare services, or providing accommodation for those who may not be fit to drive.
4) Act - You also need to be observant and prepared to intervene if necessary. Look out for signs of excessive drinking or discomfort in guests and offer assistance or alternatives. Having a plan in place to manage potential overuse ensures a fun and safe environment for everyone at the house party.
Tips to party outside safely
1. Partying outside and clubbing can be exhilarating experiences, and embracing responsible choices can amplify the fun while ensuring safety and memorable moments. Start by setting intentions for the outing—whether it's to dance, socialize, or simply unwind. Having a clear goal helps maintain focus and enjoyment without feeling pressured to engage in activities that don't align with your preferences.
2. Choosing the right company is key. Surround yourself with friends who respect your choices and support a variety of partying styles. A supportive group ensures a comfortable environment where everyone can have an enjoyable time without judgment.
3. Explore the diverse offerings at clubs and include non-alcoholic beverages or mocktails. Also, make sure to either carry a bottle of water or keep drinking water at regular intervals. These options can keep you refreshed and replenished while you are partying hard. Focus on the music, dancing, or engaging conversations to enhance your experience without relying on substances.
4. Again, at the end of the night, making sure to plan your transportation ahead of time is crucial. Whether it's designating a sober driver, using rideshare services, or being aware of public transport options, having a safe way to return home ensures a worry-free night out.
Finally, if you feel that your friends are in trouble or might be in a situation that is causing them discomfort through alcohol or substance use, don’t panic. Here are a few steps you can follow:
1. Buy some glucose and mix it with water
2. Induce vomiting in your friend to remove the substances/alcohol from their stomach
3. Make sure that they feel calm and safe. Don't act judgemental around your friends
4. Get a cab to your house/ the place you are staying
5. When reaching your destination, make sure your friend has a hot shower to bring them out of their inebriated sense
6. Finally, ensure they drink more fluids like water and glucose throughout the night.

8. Keep a non-judgmental stance throughout the night and post the night as well. Remember your friends need you to be supportive and not judgmental.
